Our History
Early Beginnings (1987-2002)
Sheepworld opened its doors in 1987 with a grand opening by former Prime Minister Robert Muldoon. Founded by the Clark family, the park initially focused on selling wool clothing and locally made arts and crafts to tourists traveling between Whangarei and Auckland. Over time, the store’s attractions became the main draw. By the late 1990s, Sheepworld was known for its entertaining sheep and dog shows, a petting zoo, a themed playground, and a welcoming café. Visitors also had the option to stay at the Sheepworld Caravan & Camping Park. The park’s 'Sheep on Tour' program took sheep to schools across the region, teaching animal husbandry and woolcraft to students.
Change & Expansion (2003-2021)
In 2003, John Collyer purchased Sheepworld and transformed the Farm. Under his ownership, Sheepworld saw significant upgrades, including new attractions and modernised facilities. In 2008, John successfully invited Lorraine Robertson-Smith to bring her Beak Farmyard attraction to Sheepworld. This addition introduced a variety of animals, including ostriches, emus, miniature horses, and kunekune pigs, enhancing the park’s appeal.
A New Chapter with Springboard (2021-Present)
During the challenges of the Covid pandemic, Collyer decided to list Sheepworld for sale. In 2021, Sheepworld was purchased by Springboard Community Works, a not-for-profit youth education organisation founded by Gary Diprose in 2002. With this new chapter, Sheepworld continues to celebrate its rich history while embracing a new mission.
the springboard connection
Under Springboard’s ownership, Sheepworld has expanded its role in the community by offering training opportunities for at-risk youth. Springboard works with the most vulnerable young people in our community, supporting them through transformational change.
By giving them access to trusted adults who equip them with experiences, strategies and tools, young people are dealing with their external and internal challenges to find the place where they’re thriving and proud of what they are achieving. Springboard is a wrap-around service delivering education, wellbeing, and employment programmes that operate on-site at Sheepworld and within the community for over 400 young people per year.
Sheepworld was purchased to provide real world training opportunities for young people as well as providing an alternative funding avenue.
Springboard is a not for profit organisation dedicated to improving the life outcomes for youth and families in need.
All profit from Sheepworld contributes to the work that Springboard does in our community. Keen to learn more?
